The EHS Specialist will be responsible to support the EHSS Manager in the role to ensure EHSS practices are in alignment with company policies, regulatory requirements, and permit commitments. The EHS Specialist will be responsible for assisting the site EHSS Manager by helping manage and improve the environmental, safety, health, and security programs and serves as primary administrative back up to the EHSS Manager. Supports line management in the enforcement of site requirements and regulations. This position is also responsible for construction safety. In this role, the employee will be responsible to establish and maintain an EHSS management system (practices, policies, procedures, training, inspections, monitoring, etc.) that meets or exceeds relevant local, state, and federal regulations including, but not limited to, OSHA, EPA, DOT, ADEM, and DEA regulations, while fostering an environment of teamwork and continuous improvement. RESPONSIBILITIES Assist with health and safety programs such as the Pharmaceutical Evaluation and Safe Handling Program, Personal Protective Equipment Program, Respiratory Protection Plan, Reproductive Hazard Plan, Medical Surveillance Program and Hazard Communication Program. Conduct and/or assist with comprehensive IH surveys when needed to measure APIs, solvent vapors, and other potential hazards. Evaluate these measurements and determines potential health risk for employees. Written IH reports with detailed measurement results and recommendations are prepared for each IH survey. Be an administrative contact for ESTER input and status management. Support the line functions at the site in an EHSS role. Support the EHSS Manager in developing all necessary core EHSS programs with to ensure compliance with sound EHSS practices and Environmental permit requirements. Support and train under the EHSS Manager in order to submit local, state, and federal required reports (OSHA, EPA, JEFFERSON COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH). Maintain EHSS supplies and control cost for EHSS supplies. Assist the EHSS manager with maintaining EHSS KPI’s for the site so EHSS performance can be assessed. Assist with managing the hazardous waste process by providing line management guidance on proper waste disposal, interfacing with the site hazardous waste vendor and acting as the SME for hazardous waste activities. Assist with conducting Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments, Pre-Start-up Safety Reviews (PSSRs), and Qualitative Risk Assessments (QRAs). Provide site support for implementing and auditing DEA requirements. Support the EHSS Manager in his role as site security manager and with emergency management planning. Conduct or assist with audits of site EHSS programs, Responsible Care 14001 audits and providing Subject Matter Expert (SME) support of outside EHSS audits at the site. Oversee the overall EHSS training process to ensure employees are trained as required by regulation (such as DOT/IATA (HazMat) regulations) or Corporate / BU / BL / regional requirements Additional EHSS functions, as assigned by EHSS Manager Assist the EHSS manager with strengthening the Safety at Evonik culture process at the site. Support the site’s Central Safety Team (CST), by attending monthly meetings, and providing EHS guidance and recommendations where needed during CST related projects and activities. REQUIREMENTS A B.S. in a relevant technical field (chemistry, biology, microbiology, chemical engineering, industrial hygiene, etc). Master’s degree preferred in EHSS related concentration Experience in EHSS function in the chemical industry, IH practice with high potent APIs preferred Must be capable of reviewing, evaluating, and setting EHSS policy · Knowledge of relevant OSHA policies related to chemical research (laboratory) environments including, but not limited to HAZWOPER, Hazard Communication, Chemical Hygiene, PPE, blood-borne pathogen, etc. Familiarity with state/federal EPA and DOT regulations affecting facility permitting and reporting, hazardous waste shipments, hazardous waste disposal Must be able to pass a DEA background check (as described by 21CFR1301.93) Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) Excellent interpersonal and team-building skills; demonstrated ability to develop relationships across departments Excellent organization and documentation skills · Experience conducting employee safety training sessions Physically able to sit/stand for extended periods of time, bend/stoop, walk, lifting of up to 40 lbs Your Application To ensure that your application is proceeded as quickly as possible and to protect the environment, please apply online via our careers portal.
