Responsibilities

Interpret and abstract data (clinical, demographic, etc) from the electronic medical record for malignant and non-malignant tumors into the network cancer registry database in accordance with guidelines set forth by national standard setters and the cancer reporting legal requirements from the State of Ohio. Identify cancer cases across the network that must be reported per state/national guidelines via casefinding procedures. Maintains the cancer registry abstract with annual outcomes data collection, including the vital status and cancer status of patients annually. Assists in maintaining high quality cancer registry data collection thru departmental quality initiatives. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Skills:
  • Utilize Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, OneDrive) and Microsoft Teams
  • Abstract information from the electronic medical record
  • Code information into cancer registry software
  • Apply ICD-O coding guidelines
  • Apply AJCC staging guidelines
  • Apply STORE/FORDS coding/abstracting guidelines
  • Apply NAACCR coding/abstracting guidelines
  • Abilities:
  • High attention to detail

  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to multitask and meet established deadlines
  • Education:
  • Associate degree in a healthcare field, required (degree to have included medical terminology, pharmacology, and 2 semesters of human anatomy and physiology (or equivalent) at a minimum)
  • Work Experience:
  • 2-5 years cancer registry experience is preferred, especially in a healthcare system or network cancer registry structure.
  • Licenses, Certifications and Registrations:
  • Certified Tumor Registrar® (CTR) credential by the National Cancer Registrar’s Association, required.
  • Registered Health Information Technician®/Administrator® (RHIT/RHIA) credential by the American Health Information Management Association, preferred.
  • Work Location:

Candidates for this position may participate in the departmental remote work program for CTRs if they meet and maintain the requirements outlined in the program, which include quality standards and productivity goals.

The work location could include onsite, hybrid (onsite and remote), or fully remote status.
