NBC News Digital is looking for an experienced editor to join its platforms team in Los Angeles. Reporting to the deputy director of owned platforms, the editor will play a key role curating NBC News owned and social platforms in the evenings PT, Mon-Fri, and in ensuring a smooth handover between the platforms team in LA and London.

The ideal candidate has strong news judgment and a talent for writing eye-catching headlines, alerts and social copy. The role requires an understanding of digital audiences and mobile trends, and experience reading real-time analytics and data.

The role requires accuracy and speed in high-pressure moments. We’re looking for a creative thinker who can multitask, meet deadlines and isn’t rattled when news breaks or plans change. The editor needs to have immaculate attention to detail and understand the importance of delivering an engaging and diverse mix of content on different platforms. They also need a breadth of knowledge about national and international stories and experience publishing in a content management system.

Candidates should be comfortable working in a hybrid WFH environment and juggling the multitude of communication channels and large volume of comms that come with Slack, email and Teams meetings. Excellent communication skills are a must and experience navigating the dynamics of a large newsroom is preferred.

The position is full time and based in Los Angeles. This position is represented by the NewsGuild-CWA.

Job Description

  • Curate the NBC News’ owned and social platforms with a lively mix of breaking news, politics, enterprise reporting and video
  • Maintain overnight planning and handover notes, ensuring a smooth transition between Los Angeles and London and ultimately New York the next day
  • Write headlines, social copy and breaking news alerts
  • Distribute content to partners such as Apple News, Yahoo, Flipboard and Smartnews
  • Monitor real-time analytics to inform story curation and distribution strategy
  • Partner with editors from sections around the newsroom to ensure their stories are promoted and distributed in all the right places
  • Work with the photo team to illustrate stories on desktop and app


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and comparable work experience
  • 6+ years’ experience working in a digital newsroom, with experience working on owned or social platforms
  • A broad knowledge of current affairs, including the latest in politics, race, social justice, international affairs, pop culture and sports
  • Must be comfortable collaborating in a creative but demanding environment under tight deadlines
  • Must submit an attestation disclosing your COVID-19 vaccination status and, if partially or fully vaccinated, submitting your vaccination record no later than 7 days following commencement of employment.
